How to convert Word to Markdown (3 steps)
Full workflow: going the other way with the same engine
Example: DOCX → Markdown
A real round-trip: the .docx produced by the Markdown → Word tool (headings, table, lists, quote, code, footnote, math, image placeholder), converted back here.
probe.docx — a Word file: Heading 1 “Quarter in review”, a bold+link paragraph, a table,
numbered and task lists, a blockquote, code, a footnote, math as text, an image placeholder.Formatted rendering of the real Markdown output (source below).

What converts natively (and what doesn't)
| Feature | Result in the Markdown |
|---|---|
| Heading 1–6 styles | Native — Reproduced as # through ###### |
| Bold, italic, strikethrough | Native — **strong**, *em* and ~~struck~~ in the output |
| Hyperlinks | Native — [text](url) — https and mailto |
| Bulleted and numbered lists, incl. nesting | Native — Standard Markdown list syntax from real Word numbering |
| Images | Native — Extracted into a media/ folder inside the ZIP, referenced with relative paths |
| Simple tables | Native — GitHub-flavored pipe tables |
| Complex / merged-cell tables | Partial — rowspan/colspan expand into the grid — columns stay aligned, covered cells empty (GFM has no merge syntax) |
| Text boxes | Partial — Best-effort extraction of text outside the main flow |
| Tracked changes | Partial — Accepted-changes semantics: insertions kept, deletions dropped — Markdown has no revision-mark concept |
| Word “Quote” style blockquotes | Native — Quote / Intense Quote / Block Text styles map to > quotes; unstyled indents stay plain paragraphs |
| Headers, footers, page numbers | Not supported — Dropped — they are layout, not content |
| Legacy .doc files | Not supported — Rejected with a clear message — save as .docx first |
Full element-by-element ground truth, with test dates: format support.
What this tool does not do
- No: Legacy binary .doc files — only modern .docx is read
- No: True merged cells — rowspan/colspan expand into the grid (covered cells empty); Markdown has no cell-merge syntax
- No: Headers, footers, page numbers and TOC fields — layout, not content
- No: Comments and revision history
What people use Word to Markdown for
Frequently asked questions
Are images recovered?
Yes. Images embedded in your Word file are extracted and packaged into a ZIP alongside the .md file, referenced with relative paths.
Are legacy .doc files supported?
No — only modern .docx files. Legacy .doc, encrypted and macro-enabled documents are rejected with a clear message.
How are tracked changes handled?
The converted output reflects the text as it appears in the document; revision marks, comments and version history are not Markdown concepts, so they are not carried over.
What about complex tables or text boxes?
Simple tables convert well. Merged cells expand into the grid with covered cells empty (Markdown has no cell-merge syntax), and text-box content is best-effort — anything approximate is listed in the warnings before you export.
Is my Word file uploaded to a server?
No. The .docx is parsed inside your browser and your data never touches a network — the same architecture as every DocsFast tool. Open DevTools with the Network tab visible and convert: watch no request carry your file.
Which Word features map to which Markdown?
Heading styles become # headings, bold and italic become ** and *, real Word numbering becomes numbered lists, tables convert to GFM pipes, and embedded images are extracted into a media/ folder inside the ZIP rather than uploaded anywhere.
Why is a heading missing from my output?
Word only maps to Markdown when true styles are used: text that is simply large and bold — without the Heading 1 style — converts as a plain paragraph. Apply real Word styles in the source document first.
Why convert Word to Markdown at all?
Because Word files do not diff, review or publish well. Markdown drops into Git, static site generators, wikis, Obsidian and Notion — and it is the format AI tools read most reliably. This converter recovers the structure from a .docx so you do not retype it.
Can I use the output in GitHub or a static site generator?
Yes. The output is GitHub-flavored Markdown: headings, lists, pipe tables and fenced code that paste cleanly into README files, pull requests, Jekyll, Hugo, Astro and most CMS editors.
Will complex formatting carry over exactly?
No — and that is by design. Markdown has no concept of fonts, colours or page layout, so what carries over is structure: headings, emphasis, lists, tables, links, images and code. Anything approximate is flagged in the warnings before you export.
