What converts natively (and what doesn't)

FeatureResult in the XLSX/CSV
All Markdown tables in a documentNative — Every pipe table is detected and exported — not just the first
Excel .xlsx outputNative — A real workbook: bold header row per table, tables stacked with spacing
CSV outputNative — All tables, properly quoted per RFC-4180
Leading zerosNative — 00123 stays 00123 — values are written as text, never coerced
Merged / complex cellsNot supported — Not a Markdown capability, so not produced
Formulas or chartsNot supported — Output is data only

What people use Markdown Table to Excel for

AI tables into real spreadsheetsChatGPT, Claude and Gemini render tables as Markdown — paste one here and download a real .xlsx with the values intact, no re-typing and no screenshot-to-data recovery.
README tables into analysisTake the tables from a project README or issue thread into Excel or CSV so they can be sorted, charted and joined like data again.

Frequently asked questions

Does it detect multiple tables?

Yes. Every supported table in your Markdown is detected and exported into the workbook; the CSV export includes all of them too.

Will my data become numbers against my will?

No. Everything exports as text — leading zeros, long IDs and cached formula results stay exactly as detected.

Will Excel turn my leading zeros into numbers?

No — values are written as text, which is exactly how ZIP codes, order numbers and product codes survive a round-trip through Excel. The CSV export behaves the same way.

Can I upload a .md file instead of pasting?

Yes — choose a .md file or paste. Either way every table in the document is detected, and you can download the workbook or a CSV.

Do my tables go into separate Excel tabs?

Not today — detected tables stack in one worksheet with spacing between them. Separate tabs per table are on the roadmap.

How do I get a ChatGPT table into Excel?

Copy the AI's response and paste it here — ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini emit tables as Markdown — then download the .xlsx. Every value is written as text, so leading zeros and long IDs survive the trip. The full workflow is in the ChatGPT-table-to-Excel guide.

Why is my data exported as text, not numbers?

Deliberately. Text export is what keeps ZIP codes, order numbers and product codes intact — Excel cannot strip a leading zero from a value it treats as text. If you want arithmetic, convert the column in Excel afterwards.
