What converts natively (and what doesn't)

FeatureResult in the Markdown table
Any .xlsx workbookNative — Worksheets are listed for you to pick one
Cached formula resultsNative — Formulas are never executed; the last calculated value is used
DatesNative — Emitted as YYYY-MM-DD
Leading zerosNative — Kept for text cells AND 0-padded number formats like 00000 (engine v0.4.0)
Rich text cellsNative — Bold/italic runs map to Markdown emphasis (***…***/**…**/*…*) inside the cell (engine v0.4.0)
Legacy .xlsNot supported — Rejected — re-save as .xlsx first

Full element-by-element ground truth, with test dates: format support.

What this tool does not do

  • No: Legacy .xls files
  • No: Evaluating formulas — only cached results are read
  • No: Selecting a partial range — the whole worksheet is converted
  • No: Charts, images and cell colours

What people use Excel to Markdown for

Spreadsheet data into documentationPublish a sheet of figures, test matrices or pricing into a README or docs page — cached formula results come through as values, leading zeros stay put.
Reports out of Excel, into wikisMove recurring Excel reports into Markdown tables for Confluence, Notion or GitHub — no screenshot, no re-typing, structure intact.

Frequently asked questions

Are formulas evaluated?

No. Only the last calculated (cached) values are read — formulas themselves are never executed, which is both safer and faster.

Are leading zeros preserved?

Yes. Values like ZIP codes '00123' stay text — cells are read exactly as stored and rendered into the Markdown table.

Does it read .xls files?

No — only modern .xlsx workbooks. If your file opens in “Compatibility Mode”, re-save it as .xlsx in Excel first, then convert.

What happens to my formulas?

They are never executed. The converter reads the cached result Excel already calculated, which is both safer (no code surface) and faster. Values you typed stay exactly as typed.

Can I convert several sheets at once?

One worksheet converts at a time — pick it from the dropdown. Convert each sheet separately, or paste multiple blocks into the table generator if you are building one document.

How are empty cells handled?

They become empty table cells in the Markdown output — rows and columns are preserved so your structure survives.

Are dates converted to a standard format?

Yes — date cells are emitted as ISO YYYY-MM-DD in the Markdown table, independent of how Excel displays them, so 03/04/2024 cannot silently become April 3rd in someone else's locale.

Can I convert just a range of cells?

Not today — the whole worksheet converts and you trim what you do not need from the table. A range picker is on the roadmap; pasting a specific selection into the table generator is the workaround meanwhile.
