Example: Markdown → DOCX

A kitchen-sink document — headings, tables, every list style, quote, code, footnote, math, an image and a raw-HTML block — because that is exactly where converters silently differ.

Fidelity report for this exact input: Measured on this exact input: 12 native — including the numbered list, the real page-bottom footnotes, the clickable checkbox task list and the E = mc² equation (OMML) — 1 approximated (the remote image stays a labelled placeholder, never fetched), 1 dropped (raw HTML). Fidelity 86/100, reported before download.

What converts natively (and what doesn't)

FeatureResult in the DOCX
Headings 1–6Native — Real Word Heading styles — they drive the Navigation Pane and auto-TOC
GFM tablesNative — Editable Word table: bold header row, cell borders
Bold, italic, strikethrough, inline codeNative — Word run formatting; inline code in Consolas
LinksNative — Clickable http/https/mailto hyperlinks
Bulleted lists, incl. nestingNative — Nested up to 8 levels
Code blocksNative — Consolas with a shaded background
Numbered (ordered) listsNative — Real Word decimal numbering, nested up to 8 levels; each list restarts at 1
Task listsNative — Real Word checkbox content controls — click to toggle in Word (engine v0.4.0)
BlockquotesNative — Word “Quote” paragraph style — indented, italic, left rule (engine v0.4.0)
FootnotesNative — Real Word footnotes — superscript reference markers, definitions at the bottom of the page
Math (LaTeX)Native — Native editable equations (OMML) for the supported subset: fractions, roots, powers, bounds (\sum \int \lim), common symbols — the rest stays styled text, flagged per instance
ImagesPartial — data: PNG/JPEG images are embedded; remote/relative files become labelled placeholders — never fetched (privacy)
Raw HTMLNot supported — Removed for safety
Front-matter (YAML/TOML)Native — title/author/description/subject/keywords map to Word core properties; other keys are listed in the report
Mermaid code blocksPartial — Rendered as code blocks; diagram rendering is planned

Full element-by-element ground truth, with test dates: format support.

What this tool does not do

  • No: Equation subset — fractions, roots, powers, bounds and common symbols convert natively; unusual LaTeX stays styled text (flagged)
  • No: Remote/relative images are never fetched (privacy); data: PNG/JPEG images are embedded
  • No: Legacy .doc files — convert to .docx in Word first
  • No: Reference-doc / custom .docx templates
  • No: Letter/landscape and margin presets (output is A4 with 2 cm margins)

What people use Markdown to Word for

AI chat output into a client-ready reportPaste a ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini answer and download a .docx with real headings, editable tables and working links — ready to circulate for review instead of a screenshot.
Developer docs for non-developer reviewersTurn README files, API specs and design docs into Word files that product managers and legal can mark up with Track Changes — real Heading 1–6 styles included.
Academic writing with equations and footnotesDraft in Markdown with LaTeX math; export a .docx where supported math becomes editable Word equations (OMML) and footnotes land at the bottom of the page.
Obsidian and Notion notes out of the vaultExport vault notes as Markdown and convert them in one pass — tables, task lists and quotes land in Word exactly as structured.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Markdown to Word converter free?

Yes. Every conversion is free with no signup, no watermarks, no daily limits, and no hidden tiers. The conversion runs entirely in your browser.

Are Word headings real headings?

Yes. Headings become native Word Heading 1–6 styles, so they appear in Word's Navigation Pane and can drive an automatic table of contents.

Are tables editable in Word?

Yes. Markdown tables (including GitHub-flavored tables) become native, fully editable Word tables with real cell contents.

Is my document uploaded to a server?

No. Conversion happens locally in your browser. Your document content is not uploaded during normal conversion.

What happens to equations?

Engine v0.3.0 turns supported LaTeX into real, editable Word equations (OMML): fractions, roots, powers and indices, \sum/\int/\lim with bounds, and the common symbols. Anything outside that subset stays as styled math text and is flagged in the fidelity report — never silently mangled.

Does it work with Google Docs and LibreOffice?

The output is standard Office Open XML. It opens in Word, LibreOffice Writer, and imports into Google Docs, though exact visual styling can differ slightly between applications.

What page setup does the Word file use?

A4 portrait with 2 cm margins, a footer showing “Page X of Y”, and your document name in the header. The output opens cleanly in Word 2016 and later, LibreOffice Writer, and imports into Google Docs.

Can I convert many Markdown files at once?

Batch conversion is on the roadmap. Today one document converts at a time — each conversion runs in a second or two with no artificial file-size limits, and nothing is uploaded.

Do numbered lists stay numbered?

Yes, as of engine v0.3.0 — numbered lists become real Word numbered lists with decimal numbering that restarts for each list. Footnotes likewise became real Word footnotes. The fidelity report shows both as native mappings.

What happens to YAML front-matter?

Known keys map into the Word file's core properties: title, author (creator), description, subject and keywords become the document metadata you see in File → Info. Unknown keys are listed in the fidelity report instead of being silently dropped.

Is there a file size limit?

No artificial limit. Conversion runs in your browser, so the practical ceiling is your device's memory — typical reports, specs and README files convert in a second or two, and multi-hundred-page documents work fine.

Can I convert Markdown to Word without installing Pandoc?

Yes — that is the point of this tool. No installs, no command line and no upload: paste and download. The full comparison of browser conversion, VS Code, Word's paste and Pandoc is in the without-Pandoc guide.

Markdown vs Word — which should I write in?

Write in Markdown when the source of truth should be plain text — version control, docs-as-code, AI editing. Deliver in Word when someone needs to review, comment, print or submit. This converter is the bridge between the two.

Do emoji and Unicode characters survive?

Yes. Text is written as UTF-8, so emoji, accented characters and CJK text pass through as normal characters in the .docx. Only Markdown syntax is transformed; your characters are never rewritten.
