What is a .md file? (And what to do with one)
You downloaded README.md, or an AI assistant handed you notes.md — here's what that file is, why tech people love the format, and how to turn it into a Word or PDF document anyone can read.
A .md file is Markdown: plain text that describes its own formatting
.md stands for Markdown, a plain-text format where simple characters carry formatting meaning. A line starting with # is a title; wrapping a word in **two asterisks** makes it bold; pipes arranged in rows describe a table. Because the file is ordinary text, it survives version control, diff tools, email and decades of software change — which is why it's the native format of GitHub READMEs, technical documentation, AI chatbots and note apps like Obsidian.

What opens a .md file
| Tool | What you see |
|---|---|
| Notepad / TextEdit / any text editor | The raw text, markers and all — fine for editing, ugly for reading |
| VS Code, Obsidian, Typora | Raw text plus a rendered preview pane |
| Browser preview (DocsFast editor) | Formatted view, live as you type — nothing installed |
| A converter → Word | A real .docx with Heading styles and editable tables |
Microsoft Word itself has no Markdown import: opening the file directly treats it as unknown text. Convert first, then open in Word.
Turning a .md file into a document
- Preview it — open it in the online editor to confirm the content reads correctly formatted.
- Convert it — Markdown → Word for an editable .docx, → PDF for a print-ready file, or → HTML for a styled web page. The conversion runs in your browser; upload nothing.
- Check the report — the fidelity report lists which elements (tables, code, footnotes, math) converted natively and which were approximated, before you download.

Frequently asked questions
How do I open a .md file?
Any text editor opens it — Notepad, TextEdit, VS Code — because a .md file is plain text. To see it formatted rather than as raw syntax, use a Markdown preview tool like the DocsFast editor, which renders the formatting live in your browser.
Can I convert a .md file to Word?
Yes. A converter parses the Markdown structure and produces a real .docx — headings as Word Heading styles, tables as editable tables. The DocsFast Markdown to Word tool does this in your browser without uploading the file.
Is a .md file safer than a .docx?
Meaningfully safer to receive. A .md file is plain text: it cannot carry macros, embedded scripts or exploit payloads the way binary document formats can. If someone sends you a README.md, opening it in a text editor poses no document-exploit risk.
Why did an AI chatbot give me a .md file?
AI assistants write Markdown because it is plain text that still describes structure. A file named notes.md or CLAUDE.md from an AI session contains that Markdown; convert it to Word, PDF or HTML to share it with people who expect a formatted document.
